I am delighted to participate in the inauguration of International Conference on Polymers "POLY 2008" organized by Asian Polymer Association in partnership with IIT Delhi and Reliance Industry. I convey my greetings to the Organizers, Polymer Scientists, Technologists, Educationists, Business leaders and distinguished invitees participating in the conference.
Today, plastics or polymers are finding applications in various disciplines such as transportation, energy, structures, chemical, healthcare, agriculture, electronics, bio-medicals and environment. The applications are widespread since there are enormous range of possible structures, giving a huge variety of properties and they are generally easy to process and shape, leading to amenable manufacturing processes. While I am with the polymer community, I would like to share with you my experience with the design, development and production of composite products.
Plastic Road using Plastic Waste:During my recent visit to Thiagarajar College of Engineering (TCE), Madurai, I found that the Department of Chemistry has developed the patened "Plastic Road Technology" using plastic wastes mixed with Tar. The quality and strength of road increases manifold due to the Plastic Road Technology. There are very less chances for the formation of potholes. It is an important contribution for safe disposal of plastics without adverse environmental effects. It is giving a solution to the growing environmental problems due to plastics since there is a continuous growth in the use of plastics in the society. This technology has caught the attention of several states in the country and also few Asian nations.
